I've had two laminectomys. I herniated a disc in my lower back about ten years ago. The sciatic nerve pain was so bad I was unable to even move without narcotics. I lived on pain meds for two years, managed to hold down jobs where I stood on my feet all day etc. After awhile though, the meds didn't work very well without taking large amounts. All very scary. I opted for the surgery. I had my first laminectomy done in Nov. of 95? I think, and then two months later, I decided to clean out my garage by myself and reherniated the same disc. (Not the smartest thing I ever did) There was very little disc material left after the first surgery and none after the second. I was told I would probably always have some sciatic nerve pain, but much milder and I would have arthritis in my spine due to the fact that they did not immobilize (fuse) the discs and they were rubbing bone on bone. They were wrong. I have NO sciatic pain and only a little stiffness if I sit in one position too long. My surgery was a raging success. If I had known how positive the outcome would be I would never have hesitated so long.

Hi all ~ ;D I have had a total of 7 spine surgeries up to this point. I had 4 lumbar and 3 cervical over a 10 year period. Most were in the last 5 years that is 6 out of the 7 were in the last 5 years. I have to say the same as ellie 1 mine were and are still a great success. My problem is that I still have other levels of my spine which are bad so surgery is still in my future. I will write more later...... Shirl
