Have you had any problems with teeth and gums while taking your AEDS?
I became toxic on zarontion and my teeth were bleeding and I was eating baby food as I weaned off the medicine and I needed a gum operation.
Ever since than I use a electric toothbrush, I perfer phillips, stronger motor. than I floss, than I use a water pik with warm water and hydrogen peroxide I do this ritually every nite.
After the gum operation I had to do it twice a day till my gums returned to normal.

I started taking Dilantin a few weeks ago, and I've noticed my gums are unusually sore. It hurts to brush, and flossing is excrutiating, but I don't want to have more problems in the future, so I just have to deal with it. I didn't know you could have an operation on your gums.

Yup they scrapped the gums and they bleed and bleed. Its disgusting. Talk to your dr and dentist about your gums. You will need to be super vilgent about your gums with dilantin. You should think about purchasing a water pik to toughen them up after the brushing and flossing. You can get a waterpik at target or walmart or kmart. But definalty call your Dr and Dentist to find out what you can do to protect your gums. Are you taking vitamins, they are also important in the protection for your gums and immune system.

Dilantin can indeed hurt your gums. Allot of people, including me, have had thier gums swell because of Dilantin. Also, my dentist told me to stay away from those tooth pastes for whitening teeth (he mentioned those with "Total" among others). They eat your gums and expose your roots.

Hi everyone, I've been on dilantin for 27 yrs, although it is supposed to be hard on the gums, I have been very lucky in that regard ~ my dentist says my gums and teeth are in excellent condition, I have them checked every 3 months instead of the normal 6 months due to my dilantin use.
But due to the dilantin use, my gums are a little softer than normal and I am a prime candidate for gingivitis.

Randy why don't use a electric toothbrush and water pik? It really toughens the gums and helps with gingivits . As I said you can get them both at Walmart,Kmart, Target, THE Bay,Eaton's ,etc.
