Ok being as this is the 'allergy' forum i thought i would give you guys some information on what an allergy is and what actually goes on in our body when we suffer an allergic reaction.
Alllergys are caused by an exaggerated reaction of the immune system (Hypersensitivity reactions). Many common illnesses such as Asthma and allergic rhinitis (commonly called hayfever) are caused by allergic reactions to substances that in the majority of people cause no symptoms.
Something you perhaps didnt know about allergies is that they occur only on the second or subsequuent exposure to the allergen, once first contact has sensitized the body.
The function of the immune system is to recognise antigens on the surfaces of microorganisms and to form antibodies and sensatized white blood cells. When the immune system next encounters the same antigen, the antibodies are sensatized white blood cells
interact with them, leading to the destruction of the microorganisms. In an allergic reaction the immune system forms antibodies agains harmless substances beacuse these allergens are misidentified as potentially harmful antigens.
i could go on and bore you even more with the different types of hypersensitivity reactions , but i wont !
about 1 in 8 people suffer allergys and there is no known reasons why some people suffer them and some do not.
Whenever possible the best treatment for an allergy is to stay away from the allergen. when this isnt possible anthistimine drugs such as Zyrtek can be used.
