Kalaripayattu is one of the traditional martial art forms of Kerala. This martial art form was taught and trained in kalaris and the teacher of each kalari was known as gurukkal. Kalari was the place of learning not only of these martial arts, but of yoga, philosophy and traditional healing methods. ``Kalaripayttu emerged as a fusion of north and south Indian traditional martial art forms,’’ says Siva, an enthusiast in kalari arts. ``It includes strikes, kicks and armed and unarmed combats. The pioneers of the art combined it with Ayurvedic treatment, providing us with a new form of martial arts,’’ he adds. The healing methods used in kalaris are normally known as kalari Chikitsa, and it mainly focuses on the healing techniques of physical injuries. It is a boon for those martial artists because even at practices they stand the risk of being wounded. The kalari gurukkal can cure the fractures and injuries through kalari chikitsa. It is mainly massages that are involved in kalari chikitsa. They include sukha thirummu, reksha thirummu and chavitti thirummu. Apart from these massages, the kalari gurukkal can perform kizhi application too. (Various medicinal concoctions kept in a kizhi (cotton pouch) are applied on the body of the patient in this treatment, after keeping the kizhis in warm medicinal oil for quite some time.) As all these massages and kizhi treatment are part of Ayurveda, you can also avail them either from ayurveda resorts keralaor from Ayurveda hospitals in the State.
