For those of you who don't know...
VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation) is a treatment that was recently approved for use with depression. The treatment consists of a pacemaker-like device being implanted in the chest through a surgical procedure. The VNS delivers electrical impulses to the vagus nerve, which relays information to the brain. A thin wire connects the vagus nerve (in the neck) to the device located in the chest. The electrical impulses have been proven to relieve symptoms of depression.
Now, I have personally never considered a procedure as serious as this to overcome my depression. With the risks involved, such as infection, etc. I don't really see the pros outweighing the cons. The treatment is proven to assist in treating depression, but is not supposed to replace counseling or medications. The results of testing showed that a patient had to continue regular treatment, with the implant, in order to see better results. I would rather just not have to have a surgical procedure, no matter how minor. But, I would love to hear about any positive or negative results people have had with VNS. Maybe you can change my opinion. Lord knows I need all the help I can get!!
